CONFLICT BETWEEN THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN SOCIETIES
The North was afraid that the South would force its "peculiar institution" (slavery) upon the entire nation. The South was made up of slave states and the North, free states. The South supported slavery because due to the strong agrarian society they possessed, slaves were essential to work in the fields and plantations to keep their economy on its feet. Large planters owned 50 slaves or more to work in their plantations.
Two of their major sources of disagreement were over protective tariffs and slavery. The North wanted slavery to be contained in the South, where as the South wanted it to spread.
Northerners were abolitionists, since they lived in an industrial society, there was no need for slaves working in fields. The North also had growth of cities, if the cities grew too much, the North would have to interfere with the South and take away part of the South. They had a larger population, a strong faith in a big government, and passionate feelings against slavery.
